About the White Screen

What is a white screen?

A white screen fills your whole display with pure white, the color #FFFFFF or rgb(255, 255, 255) in CSS. Full screen mode hides the tabs, toolbars and the rest of the page until you leave it.

People use a blank white screen as a fill light for calls, a light box for tracing and a quick monitor test for dead pixels or a color tint. The preview above starts on white, and you can pick another color or a Custom one at any time.

How do you make your screen white?

Go full screen with one click, then turn the brightness up yourself.

  1. Go full screen. Press the Full screen button or click the preview.
  2. Turn the brightness up. A web page can't change your brightness setting, so use the brightness keys or your system's display settings.
  3. Leave when you're done. Press Esc or F, or move the mouse and select Exit full screen in the top-right corner. On a touch screen, tap once to show that button.

To light up a second monitor, drag the browser window onto it first, then press Full screen. While full screen is on, the page also asks the browser to keep the screen from turning off.

Why doesn't the white screen look pure white?

A warm color filter or an automatic color setting can tint it.

  • Night light on Windows 11. It shows warmer colors at night. Switch it off in Settings, then System, then Display.
  • Night Shift on a Mac, iPhone or iPad. It shifts colors toward the warm end after dark. On a Mac it's in System Settings, then Displays, and on an iPhone or iPad in Settings, then Display & Brightness.
  • True Tone on Apple devices. It adjusts the color to match the light in the room, so white can look slightly warm. Turn it off in the same display settings to keep the color constant.

How do you check a screen for dead pixels?

Show solid colors one after another and look closely at each one.

The Dead pixel test button shows red, green, blue, white and black in turn. Dell's built-in monitor diagnostic uses the same five colors, as its pixel guidelines explain. Click, tap or press the right arrow key for the next color. On an iPhone, the colors change every four seconds.

  • A dark dot on white is a dead pixel. All of its subpixels are permanently off, so it stays black.
  • A bright dot on black is a stuck pixel. It stays lit, either white or one color, whatever the screen shows. The Black Screen makes these easy to see.
  • Dust can look like a fault. Clean the screen first, as Dell advises, so a speck isn't mistaken for a dead pixel.

Dell warns against pixel-fixing software and says nothing can bring a dead pixel back. If you find one on a new monitor, check the maker's pixel policy and warranty.

Common Use Cases

A white screen turns any display into a plain, even light.

  • Light for Zoom, Teams or any video call. A bright screen lights your face evenly from the front. Apple added a similar effect, Edge Light, in macOS Tahoe 26.2 for Macs with Apple silicon, and likens it to a virtual ring light. The Webcam Test shows how the result looks on camera.
  • Tracing a drawing. Lay a drawing on a tablet showing white, put thin paper on top, and the lines show through.
  • Checking a new monitor. Look for dark dots, uneven patches or a tint across the white.
  • A blank background. Download a white PNG at your screen size for a wallpaper, a slide or a photo backdrop.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you exit the white screen?

Press Esc or the F key, or select Exit full screen in the top-right corner. On an iPhone, close the video player that shows the color.

Can you make the light warmer?

Yes, choose Warm white for a softer tone, or Custom for any shade. Download PNG saves whichever color is showing.

Can you make a phone screen white?

Yes, Android browsers can show the color full screen. On an iPhone, where web pages can only show videos full screen, the color plays in the phone's own video player.

Can you leave the white screen on for hours?

Yes, there's no time limit. The page asks the browser to keep the screen awake until you exit or switch tabs, though the browser may end that early, for example on low battery.

Can you download a plain white image?

Yes, pick a size under Download as an image, then press Download PNG. The sizes include your screen's own size and common ones up to 3840 × 2160.

What is the color code for pure white?

Pure white is #FFFFFF in hex and rgb(255, 255, 255) in RGB. Every color channel is at its highest value.
