About the Online Tape Measure
What is an online tape measure?
An online tape measure is a true-to-size measuring strip on your screen that continues past the edge, the way tape pulls out of a case.
A screen ruler stops at the width of your display. This one does not, so a 2 meter tape stays usable on a laptop that is only 30 cm across.
How to Use This Tool
- Calibrate once. Press Calibrate, then match the shape on screen to a card, a coin or a sheet of paper, or enter your screen size.
- Choose units and length. Switch between centimeters and inches, then pick how much tape you want.
- Scroll to reach the far end. Drag the strip sideways when the tape runs past the edge of the screen.
- Drag to measure. Drag between two points and the readout shows the span in both systems.
Example
Drag between two points on the tape and the pixel distance will be converted to a reading in both measuring systems at once:

Switch Units to Inches and the same drag leads with 10 7/16" instead, with the metric figure in brackets.

A tape that outruns the screen suits the jobs a short rule cannot handle:
- Checking furniture: Work out whether a 60 cm shelf clears the gap you had in mind.
- Fabric and ribbon: Measure a length of trim by running it along the tape in stages.
- Packaging: Confirm a parcel edge against a courier size limit.
- Comparing two systems: Read centimeters and inches together without doing the math.
- Teaching: Show how many centimeters make an inch on a scale that is actually true to size.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I measure something bigger than my screen?
Yes, that is the point of this tool. The tape keeps its true scale and scrolls sideways, so you move along it rather than running out of room at the edge.
Can I use my phone camera as a measuring tape?
Not with this tool, since camera measuring needs depth sensors and a native app. This tape measures what you can hold against the screen, and it asks for no permissions.
How accurate is it?
That depends on your calibration, and a larger reference object gives a tighter result. It covers craft, shopping and rough DIY, while building work still calls for a steel tape.
Does it show inches and centimeters together?
Yes. Whichever system you pick leads the readout and the other appears in brackets, so you get both from a single drag.
Do I need to calibrate it again on this device?
No. The setting is stored in your browser and shared with both of our screen rulers, so one calibration covers all three tools.
