Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between RGB and CMYK?
RGB (Red, Green, Blue) is an "additive" color model used for digital screens. The colors are created by adding light, so combining all three at full intensity results in white. CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black) is a "subtractive" model used for printing. Colors are created by subtracting brightness from white paper with ink, so combining all three results in black.
What are HSL and HSV?
HSL (Hue, Saturation, Lightness) and HSV (Hue, Saturation, Value) are two different ways to represent RGB colors that are often more intuitive for humans. Hue is the pure color (like red or blue), Saturation is the intensity of the color, and Lightness/Value is how bright or dark it is. They are very useful for creating tints and shades.
What are Tints and Shades?
Tints and shades are variations of a single color. A **tint** is created by mixing a color with white, making it lighter. A **shade** is created by mixing a color with black, making it darker. These are essential for creating depth and variation in a design without adding new colors.
What is a complementary color?
A complementary color is the color that lies directly opposite your base color on the color wheel. For example, the complement of blue is orange. Using complementary colors together creates the strongest possible contrast, making designs feel vibrant and energetic.
Are my color choices private?
Yes, completely. This tool runs entirely in your web browser. All the color calculations happen on your own computer, and your choices are never sent to or stored on our servers.
