About the HEX to RAL Converter
What is HEX to RAL conversion?
RAL Classic is a standardized set of around 216 colors used across paint, powder coating, signage, and industrial finishes — each one a fixed shade with a code like RAL 5005 and a name like "Signal blue". A HEX code, on the other hand, can be any of 16 million colors. So converting HEX to RAL isn't an exact swap; it's a match: this tool finds the RAL Classic color that sits closest to the HEX you enter and shows you how close it is.
To make that match meaningful, we don't just compare raw RGB numbers. Each color is converted into the CIE Lab space and compared with a ΔE (Delta-E) distance, which lines up with how the human eye actually perceives color difference. You get the single best RAL match plus the next closest options, so you can pick the shade that works for your project. It all runs in your browser — nothing you enter is uploaded.
How to Use This Tool
- Enter your color. Type or paste a HEX code, click the swatch to use your system picker, or grab a color from your screen with the eyedropper.
- See the closest RAL. The best match appears with its RAL code, name, HEX, RGB, and a ΔE score telling you how close the match is.
- Compare alternatives. The grid below shows the next closest RAL colors — click any to load it and compare.
- Copy what you need. Grab the RAL code for a paint order, or the HEX for digital mock-ups.
Common Use Cases
- Matching a brand color to paint: Find the RAL shade closest to a digital brand HEX for signage or a powder-coated finish.
- Specifying industrial colors: Turn a screen color into a RAL code that manufacturers and coaters understand.
- Mocking up RAL colors digitally: Get the HEX of the matched RAL to preview it in a design.
- Architecture and product design: Bridge between on-screen color and the RAL standard used on physical materials.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a HEX to RAL conversion exact?
Almost never, and that's expected. RAL Classic is a fixed palette of about 216 physical colors, while HEX can describe millions, so the tool finds the nearest RAL rather than a perfect match. The ΔE score tells you how close it is — under 2 is an excellent match, while a larger number means the closest RAL is only approximate.
What does the ΔE (Delta-E) number mean?
ΔE measures the perceived distance between two colors in CIE Lab space. Roughly: 0–1 is essentially identical, 1–2 is excellent, 2–5 is close, and above 10 the colors are clearly different. Using Lab and ΔE gives a far more human-accurate match than comparing RGB values directly.
Will the RAL color look exactly like my screen color?
Not necessarily. RAL colors are defined by physical paint samples, and screens vary, so a coated surface can look different from the on-screen HEX even for a good match. Treat the result as a strong starting point and confirm against a physical RAL fan deck for critical work.
Which RAL system does this use?
This tool uses RAL Classic, the widely used four-digit system (RAL 1000 to RAL 9023). It doesn't cover RAL Design or RAL Effect, which are separate, larger systems.
Is this tool free and private?
Completely. The matching runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript, so your colors are never uploaded or logged, and it works offline once the page has loaded.
